A Weekend of Hiking in the Cévennes
A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I escaped to the Cévennes for a few days of nature, fresh air, and adventure. We based ourselves near the charming village of Le Rozier—a perfect launching point for exploring this beautiful, rugged region of southern France. From dramatic hikes along limestone plateaus to the surreal depths of Aven Armand, here’s a look at what we saw and loved!
🌟 Aven Armand – A Journey Underground
One of the absolute highlights of our trip was visiting Aven Armand, a vast underground cavern that feels like something out of a fantasy novel. After descending via a funicular, we stepped into a dreamlike space filled with hundreds of stalagmites—some towering over 30 metres tall. The sound-and-light show really brought the magic to life. It’s otherworldly, humbling, and 100% worth a visit.
🛌 Where We Stayed: Hôtel de la Muse
We stayed at Hôtel de la Muse, and I can’t recommend it enough. Nestled by the river Tarn, it was peaceful, comfortable, and incredibly well located. The views were beautiful, and after a long day of hiking, their riverside terrace was the perfect place to unwind.
🏞 Les Corniches du Méjean Hike
One of our favourite hikes was the Corniches du Méjean, a stunning route along limestone cliffs that offered panoramic views of the Gorges de la Jonte. We spotted vultures circling overhead and enjoyed the dramatic drops and peaceful plateaus. This trail is ideal if you’re up for a moderate challenge with a big visual reward.
🌄 Roquesaltes – A Short But Sweet Hike
If you’re short on time or energy, the Roquesaltes hike is a fantastic option. It’s a shorter walk but still offers incredible views and unique rock formations. Great for a quiet morning or sunset stroll.
Final Thoughts
The Cévennes are such a gem—wild, a bit off the beaten path, and full of surprises. Whether you’re into caves, hikes, or just soaking up serene landscapes, this region has something special. We came home with tired legs, full memory cards, and a huge appreciation for this magical corner of France.
